If ever a villa were appropriately named, then Villa Bacchus is surely it. One of the most modern and decadent large villas in Marbella, it’s all about hedonism and excess – excess of stylish design features, of ultra-luxury facilities and of sheer, mind-blowing scale.

But just because Villa Bacchus is big, bold and beautiful, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t also deliver on the little things. From a dizzying array of facilities, to dedicated housekeepers, on top of an A-list Nueva Andalucia location, every tiny detail has been thought of here, every desire or indulgence catered to. It is, in a word, unique.

Welcome to Villa Bacchus

Two things immediately strike you about Villa Bacchus: that it’s beautiful – in a bold, clean-lined, modernist sort of way – and that it’s big. Very big.

To give you an indication of the sheer size of the place, the owners had originally planned to build eight separate villas on the plot before a change of heart prompted them to go all in with just one. The footprint of the villa alone is 2,400m2; there’s a rug in one of the living rooms that’s the size of a small city-centre studio apartment. It’s that big.

Size aside, though, this is far from your average holiday villa – on all counts. Blending cutting-edge architecture with striking interiors and utterly indulgent outdoor space, it’s a location – the sort of place beloved of fashion shoots, music videos, product launches or A-List celebrity weddings.

In keeping with the all-round celeb-friendly appeal of the place, privacy is key. It sits slightly above all of the neighbouring villas so people cannot see in, but it commands the best views in Nueva Andalucia.

It looks for all the world like a Bond Villain’s lair on some far-flung tropical island. There are the same razor-sharp geometric forms in blinding white, and lots of gleaming, full-height glass windows; it’s also surrounded by lush lawns and palms swaying in the breeze. There’s even a subterranean lounge area with a full-length glass wall opening out onto the swimming pool – you wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see a shark floating around in the bottle-green waters.

a sprawling pleasure palace dotted with too many design-led touches to count

Villa Bacchus runs through all the classic tricks of the large, luxury design villa playbook. Architecturally the bare bones of the place are stark and stripped back. There’s a self-supporting staircase and a cool modern fireplace here, a double-height ceiling and a floor-to-ceiling window there. All of which is overlaid on a colour palette of blinding white and cool greys.

On top of these minimalist foundations, however, the place plays with textures and space and is packed with unique style notes and chic décor touches. As a result, it doesn’t feel cold or impersonal for a moment.

So you see modern, gold-flecked marble tiles mixing with beautifully warm, hand-made Persian carpets and Indian velvets. Eye-catching design pieces dot the place, from a trio of huge birds’ nest lights above the main staircase, to high-backed design chairs, vibrant design sofas and splashes of colour in the soft furnishings.

The heart and soul of the house lies in its three fabulous living spaces. You enter through a wide-open entrance hall to the cavernous main formal living room where two seating areas made up of seriously lavish sofas sit on top of enormous swirling Persian carpets.

Downstairs, a basement leisure zone has the look and feel of a hip subterranean nightclub. Here, a cocktail bar/bodega lounge with bright pops of colour from designer furniture leads to a fully sound-proofed cinema, loaded with popcorn machine, surround sound and electric blinds for a completely black-out cinema experience.

Back up above ground, on the first floor you find the second living room; this is more of a relaxed family living room with its large TV, a beautiful nubuck leather sofa and an Egg-style armchair. It opens out on to a wrap-around terrace with views our over the pool and gardens to the sparkling sea beyond.

a vast modern xanadu with acres of pleasure-filled gardens

Inside and out, Villa Bacchus is one of those luxury villas that has you looking around, slightly wide-eyed, and scratching your head for superlatives.

The surrounding outdoor space stretches across a staggering 8000m2 of immaculate landscaping, carefully curated flowering gardens full of tropical plants, cottage-style borders and statement trees and shrubs, a Japanese-style pebbled pond with floating steps and a BBQ area. There’s also a tennis court with a large viewing deck and seating alongside, in case you need someone to critique your service game.

The pool areas – plural, for there are two – feel more in keeping with a decadent Balearic beach club than those of a villa in Marbella. One is surrounded by architectural, long grey concrete slabs and Grecian columns at one end. There’s an adjoining shady, chill-out area with high bar stools and tables, and white leather sofas. In short, they’re not just places to cool off in the water or brown yourself in the sun; they’re places to get the music on, the cocktails poured and the party started.

There’s no shortage of flora and fauna, either, with Koi carp and turtles splashing about in the water features. Perhaps a little surprisingly, fruit and vegetables are grown onsite, and there are even chickens.

But then again is it really all that surprising? From top to bottom, Villa Bacchus defies expectation at every turn. It’s a remarkable place.

The nearest shops and swish cafes are a few minutes’ drive (just 3km) away, while Puerto Banus with its beaches and nightlife. Golf courses surround the villa, with the highly regarded Los Naranjos golf club within walking distance.

Villa Bacchus is within easy reach of a whole range of amazing experiences to add to your travel memories. From exciting family adventures to world-class golf, gourmet delights to beauty spas, we work closely with the best local suppliers to help make your stay extra special.

For Spanish culture, explore the cities of Andalucia with a personal guide direct from your villa. Enjoy a selection of day tours or bespoke itineraries all with a door to door service in air-conditioned vehicles.

A perfect choice for a first-time stay in Marbella is the escorted wine and tapas tour of Marbella Old Town, where you can get to know the secret corners of this Spanish centre.

In summer you can enjoy outdoor living with two huge main terraces to chill out on, while in cooler months there’s a spacious indoor living room with over-sized sofas, TV and sound system to retreat to – ask the staff to light the fire in winter for a warm welcome after a day out.

There’s a complete home gym at one end of the main floor of the house, containing all standard gym kit – multi-gym, free weights, an outdoor workout zone, treadmill, rowing machine, boxing, yoga mats, TV, steam room, Swedish sauna and its own shower room.

If one of your party has to work during a stay, they can do so in style in the home office, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, Chesterfield sofa and chaise longue. It has its own entrance, is sound-proofed and can be closed off from the rest of the house by a concealed wall.

The formal living room is located on the main ground floor, and this leads down a couple of steps to a peaceful reading lounge.

Kids have also been thought of: there’s a family games area with floor-to-ceiling windows also leading off the main living room, as well as the TV snug at the back of the kitchen.

The main dining room is separated from the living room by an impressive modern fireplace and seats 12 people around a vast 1500kg living edge dining table made from a single trunk of tropical wood.

The second, informal dining space is a family space in the kitchen, seating 6 plus a high chair, with a further table out on the terrace seating 8-10.

Next to the main pool there’s an outdoor kitchen which is fully equipped with BBQ, hob, pizza oven and a wine cooler and an adjacent covered dining area seating 8 (with room, potentially, for more with a bit of imaginative re-arranging of the seating).

There are two pools to choose from: the front swimming pool is an infinity-style affair in beautiful light bottle green; the rear pool is huge (220m2) with gardens all around and a gorgeously louche lounging area.

The main pool is on a lower level of the garden but is still just a short saunter from the house. While it’s enormous, everything is on hand from decking areas and lawns to a shady poolside pergola with an outdoor kitchen handy for drinks and cocktails. There’s also a range of reclining options to choose from with hammocks, a variety of stylish loungers and daybeds dotted around everywhere.

If you’re of a health-conscious mind-set, aside from the pools there’s plenty to help you keep yourself in shape on holiday here: in addition to a professional grade tennis court, there’s a fully equipped gym and sauna and steam room with space for several people.
