character in spades
Compared to one or two of the other villas you’ll come across in this rarefied corner of southern Spain, Villa Matisse is not primarily about the facilities.
All of the necessary comforts you’d expect from a luxury villa are in place, of course, from the large en suite bathrooms and fully loaded TV/sound system set-up, to the underfloor heating and high thread count bed linens. But there’s no gym, spa or tennis courts here.
However, it’s got something that to some people will be much more important: it’s packed with traditional charm and character.
Striking traditional features like terracotta floors and ceiling beams – which have been painted light colours to soften and brighten the interior space – run throughout the villa.
From room to room the decor is a homely combination of custom-made luxury furnishings and well-loved family favourites and statement antiques.
The dining room centres around a beautiful mahogany table with cream button-back chairs, a glinting chandelier for a touch of elegance, and French doors that open out onto the summer terrace.
The main living room is a very grown-up space with twin Wedgewood blue sofas, cream carpet and over-sized fireplace. French windows open out on to the porch, the lovely gardens, pool and views of the countryside beyond, dotted with the luxury billionaire-owned villas of La Zagaleta.
It’s a special villa in a truly privileged location.
A Setting Worthy of a Grand Master
Villa Matisse has a setting that would have any self-respecting painter hastily reaching for their brushes.
And that location is used to full, dramatic effect, too. The views from the landscaped gardens are framed by palms swaying in the breeze; beyond, the green, tree-lined hills shimmer in the heat haze.
At the heart of the gardens are a lovely, lush lawn and a large private pool lined with loungers and sculptures. So you can sit in the cooling water and watch the last rays of the sun burning red against the mountains.
The back of the house is lined with outdoor dining and seating areas, perfect for settling in with friends and family to enjoy the long summer evenings together.
The facade provides a striking introduction on arrival. You pull up on a cobbled driveway in front of a handsome, traditional-style villa. The front door has a pillared portico flanked by huge ground floor windows lined with typically Andalucian ironwork.
Around the back, the villa is crowned by a high-ceilinged palatial terrace with wooden beams and marble pillars, grandly looking out over it all surveys. It’s the perfect spot for taking in the views.
