Although unassuming from the outside, step inside and Villa Sonata wraps you in tasteful, refined design richly decorated with bold prints, large rugs and wall treatments. Warm tones, natural materials and a careful mix of antique and modern pieces imbue it with colour and character.
The open plan kitchen, living and dining area is an intimate gathering space that opens both onto the pool terrace and the entry courtyard, from which one can see across the golf course and down to the sea. Thick curtains, padded headboards and bright cushions in the bedrooms combine to create a sense of indulgence while the hotel-style bathrooms are pure luxe.
Set into a south-facing hillside, the villa itself is on a single level with a shaded patio separating the main house from the guest annexe, ensuring plenty of privacy when needed. A sunny terrace with a dramatic infinity pool, equipped with seating and sun beds overlooking the fairway, are on the same level.
With an additional 1800 m2 of verdant gardens on various levels, there’s ample space to spread out and enjoy the blue skies and quiet location. Wander down from the pool and you’ll find a kitchen garden where you can pick fresh fruits straight from the trees, and below that, a summer kitchen and barbecue with a shaded outdoor dining area for meals under the sun or stars.
The sunny living room with patio doors on two sides that open onto the pool terrace is equipped with two sofas and two lounge chairs arranged around a series of coffee tables, creating an inviting, social space facing out to the pool, mountains and sea.
A fitted kitchen with black Dekton countertops and backsplash and appliances largely concealed behind hardwood cabinetry, is equipped with everything you need to cook wholesome family meals: Smeg kettle, toaster and juicer, Siemens oven and microwave, and integrated induction hob and wine fridge, plus a separate pantry.
An oval dining table separates the living area from the kitchen, and seats six comfortably.
Adjacent to this, in the courtyard connecting the main house to the annexe is an outdoor table that also seats six.
The lower level of the garden features a summer kitchen, with a gas barbecue, sink, fridge, and prep space, plus a dining table for six, under a pergola.
The pool deck overlooks the golf course and features six sun loungers, plus soft seating for four to six.
From there, one descends to two levels of garden, the first planted with Mediterranean and tropical fruit trees, and the lower one featuring the outdoor kitchen plus an expansive lawn where adults can practice yoga or sunbathe, and little ones can run around safely.
Principal Bedroom 1: The spacious principal bedroom, with patio doors that connect to the pool terrace, is decorated in earthy tones and furnished with an emperor size bed (200x200cm) and a mix of antique and modern furniture. The suite includes a dressing area with built-in wardrobes and a large, luxurious bathroom with a freestanding spa bath, separate rain shower, and double built-in washstand.
Guest Bedroom 2: Adjacent to the living area with patio doors that open onto the pool terrace, this bedroom is decorated in soft sage green with twin beds (90×200 cm) that can be configured as an emperor size double. It also features a large desk and chairs, built-in wardrobes and a luxurious marble bathroom with a walk-in rain shower and integrated wash basin.
Guest Bedroom 3: Located across the courtyard in a separate annexe this bedroom has its own private terrace with views over the fairway and down towards the sea. Decorated in coral tones, it is furnished with a super king size (180 cm) fourposter bed, an antique writing desk and built-in wardrobes. The en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower and integrated double washstand
Your rental includes a daily visit from the housekeeper, plus a linen and towel change at least once every 7 days (housekeeping does not include kitchen clear-up).
Additional housekeeping hours may be available to book and pay for in advance to cover things like after-dinner clearing up, extra linen changes or personal laundry.

Villa Sonata feels like a little pocket of heaven in one of the coast's most up-and-coming locations.
Visitors familiar with the Finca Cortesin resort will know that it embodies serenity, impeccable interiors and sheer good taste. This is what I expected to find - and did - in this small-but-sophisticated private villa within the Cortesin estate.
The interiors are gorgeous, but I have a bit of a thing for beautiful gardens and green, shady corners, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this Petite-Collection villa stands in such beautiful grounds. The outdoor summer kitchen/BBQ was the icing on the cake!

There are also plenty of things to do in Estepona.
The villa is within a short drive/hop in a golf buggy to the five-star Finca Cortesin Hotel, a serene retreat with a host of facilities that villa guests can make use of (pre-booking needed, fees apply).
Hotel facilities include four pools, one of which is indoors, a sensational spa with a fitness centre, thermal baths, treatment rooms and a focus on Thai treatments, a full gym, yoga centre, boutiques and several stand-out restaurants.
Food and wine lovers need not feel left out since its possible to book into the hotel’s restaurants via your concierge; Jardin de Lutz serves classic Spanish cuisine with a modern twist in a relaxed setting overlooking the hotel gardens; at Don Giovanni’s you can sample some of the finest Italian fare outside Italy, and at REI, it’s a feast of traditional Asian and Mediterranean-Asian fusion cuisine. Slightly further afield there are restaurants in Estepona and Puerto Banus.
Finca Cortesin also operates a large beach club at the coast, just 1 km from the hotel, with a stunning 35-metre infinity pool surrounded by day beds and an acclaimed restaurant serving Mediterranean food.
The nearest airports are Gibraltar (45 minutes by car) and Malaga (just over an hour by car).
