A BOLD WHITE-ON-WHITE DESIGN VISION

Villa Talaia is not somewhere that does things by halves. A huge, ultra-luxury design villa in the exclusive Cascada de Camojan neighbourhood of Marbella, it’s a dazzling design-led vision – both inside and out.

Where it really triumphs, though, is in the way it marries aesthetics and comfort. Not content with simply being big, bold and beautiful, it doubles down on the luxury front.

The high-end facilities are piled on to the length and breadth of the 5,000m2 plot – think gyms, outdoor and indoor pools, fully equipped music rooms, outdoor cinema areas, rooftop Jacuzzis, outdoor bar/kitchen areas.

The bare bones of the place are certainly impressive – with one large, light-filled space running into another.

The steady interior design hand of Pedro Peña can be clearly felt, too. The feel in the 8 bedrooms is of textural contrasts: soft shag rugs, faux fur blankets, cushions and headboards are offset by harder-edged glittering glass and metal in the form of side tables, mirrors, hanging glass droplet sidelights or in the sleek, clean-lined modern bathrooms.

Contrast creeps into the colour scheme, too, with calming, neutral creams, taupes are broken up by accent notes – a glittering gold table here, a deep teal tub chair there.

Art has a major role to play here. There are striking, brightly coloured modern paintings adorning the walls, while other carefully chosen pieces are dotted around, from Native American headdresses in the large sitting room to buffalo skulls in the indoor bar area and huge retro movie lighting in the private gym.

It is, it’s fair to say, quite a place.

SPACE TO SPARE – AND BEAUTIFUL VIEWS IN EVERY DIRECTION

In Villa Talaia renowned local architect Javier Martinez Garcia has delivered a striking vision of a luxurious designer pad. Sleek, bold and angular, it stands out as a dazzling block of white against those blue, blue Spanish skies.

The outdoor spaces and gardens here are a fully integrated part of the overall vision. Even the main outdoor pool – so often an ugly, merely functional add-on to a luxury villa – is a coherent aesthetic element in its own right, a pleasingly rectangular form alongside the house.

A major feature of Villa Talaia is just how committed it is to providing space for its guests to relax and spend time together outdoors.

First up, immediately in front of the villa by the pool, there’s a low, casual seating area under a shaded, modern pergola. Alongside it, there’s a covered pool bar with more low seating and a shaded dining area.

A minimalist water feature bisects the layered concrete, running down the steps and across a lawned area to a pond with a striking sculpture at its heart. As you follow it down the garden there’s a further brace of shady seating/dining areas.

The location here is stellar. And the villa has certainly been designed to make the most of it. The front-facing bedrooms open out onto long, lounger-lined terraces, while at the top of it all, crowning the villa, is a rooftop kitchen/bar area and Jacuzzi. From here you can see the pine-covered hills rising up to La Concha mountain; below, the views stretch away down to the sea.

There are plenty of living space options to choose from here – both inside and out.

The outdoor pool will almost certainly be the heart of the action day to day. It’s lined with loungers and adjoined by a large shady seating area, bar/kitchen and dining area. There’s even a fire pit for sitting around on cooler spring or autumn nights.

Down at the end of the garden, there are a further two shaded seating areas with sofas, armchairs and low tables.

Inside the art-filled living area has a stylish L-shaped, light chocolate sofa at its heart, a contemporary gas fire and a large TV.

Up on the roof, there’s more seating with a complete Ibiza-style leisure zone complete with cinema and a 10-person Jacuzzi.

The kitchen is a sleek gloss white affair with Gaggenau appliances – oven, steam oven, coffee machine, and a microwave and induction hob – along with all the other necessaries like an integrated fridge freezer, kettles, Nespresso and a dishwasher.

Alongside the pool and next to the kitchen/bar area is the main outdoor dining space under a shady pergola. It sits 20 comfortably.

There’s no breakfast room but the kitchen island seamlessly merges into a table with benches suitable for breakfast/informal meals/children.

The roof terrace has a bar, barbecue and seating area for 10.

Down on the lower ground floor, there’s a full gym (all machines and free weights) which includes a large sauna, small heated indoor pool and a nearby fridge with refreshments. Two massage tables are available.
