Welcome to Hacienda la Duquesa

a spacious estate for lovers of art and vistas

Hacienda La Duquesa’s prime position, in a quiet location with far-reaching views along the coast, is matched by its grand design that embraces traditional architecture and showcases fine craftsmanship.

Lavish in both scale and detail, this fine estate (now owned by a famous sculptor) is a place to savour Andalucian character and original design. From the rose marble floors to the sweeping double staircase, there’s room for large families to spill out whilst also enjoying all manner of contemporary comforts.

Generous gathering spaces, extensive gardens and an outstanding pool area ensure that there’s plenty of space for extended families to enjoy time together. With eight superb bedrooms, it’s large enough to accommodate up to four families, or groups of friends.

Ideally situated for exploring the Costa del Sol and visiting Mijas and Malaga, this fine Spanish house is just as appealing for long, lazy summer stays as for winter breaks discovering the joys of southern Spain.

A GRAND DESIGN WITH PERSONAL TOUCHES

Classic glamour and modern comfort come together seamlessly in this extraordinary home which was designed and built by a renown local architect. From the triple-height hallway to the art deco detailing on the doors and elaborate ceiling cornices, the attention to detail is exquisite. Open fireplaces, contemporary furniture and colourful fabrics from India, with a peppering of artworks (including the owner’s sculptures) lend it a light, playful feel.

At the end of a day of fun in the sun, the large living room and indoor dining room with a fireplace are inviting, elegant spaces to gather and the sleek, modern kitchen will inspire foodies to cook up a feast.

A second, smaller kitchen downstairs, is ideal for preparing simple tapas to enjoy on the adjacent terrace. A more informal family area on this level, with a TV and pool table allow for different age groups to each find their ideal space.

Bright, spacious bedrooms spread across three floors, including two with two king size beds (perfect for kids’ slumber parties) and two adjacent to the kitchen, that would suit a nanny or staff, make this property a versatile option for large groups.

ROOM TO ROAM

The abundance of outdoor spaces promise entertainment for all ages and interests, without getting under one another’s feet.

Spend summer days playing and swimming in the hotel-style pool, complete with a bridge, pergola and two entries, or soak up the sun on the spacious terrace next to it.  In the evenings, turn the pool lights on and enjoy a dip under the stars.

For those seeking a little quiet time, the leafy patio with its flowing fountain is a soothing spot to settle down with a book – or make yourself a cool drink and find a comfortable seat on one of the shady terraces.

Both children and adults will love walking or playing hide and seek in the manicured Mediterranean gardens, where sculptures are concealed among the foliage, and where pomegranates, nisperos, citrus fruits and avocados are ripe for the picking.

Enjoy the local area

Situated just below the famed and ever-so charming Mijas Pueblo, halfway between Marbella and Malaga, Hacienda La Duquesa is ideally located for exploring the Costa del Sol as well as the traditional towns of Andalucia’s interior, such as Granada and Ronda. The owner runs a private tour company so will be happy to assist with organising cultural trips.

The villa is perched on the pretty hillside between Benalmadena/Fuengirola and the white village of Mijas, with sensational sea views. It’s around seven minutes’ drive to the popular whitewashed village of Mijas where cobbled streets are filed with flowers and donkeys provide an unusual taxi service.

The closest restaurant is El Higueron, which serves traditional Spanish cuisine and craft cocktails, and there are two well-stocked supermarkets within a 10-minute drive.

For beach lovers, you will be spoiled for choice with several stretches of golden sand in each direction, including Playa La Cabana (9 minutes’ drive) and Cabopino Beach (21 minutes’ drive). If you’re feeling energetic there is a 7km promenade that runs from Cabopino to La Cala de Mijas, which can be explored on foot or by bike.

The path takes you along beaches, through sand dunes and around rocky outcrops, with boardwalks that span rivers and pass watchtowers. Along the way, keep an eye out for local wildlife – you may even see whales and dolphins offshore – and stop off at one of the cafes or restaurants for a cold drink or a meal.

For those travelling with children, the coast is dotted with theme parks, water parks and other amusement parks that will keep younger visitors entertained for hours. The popular nearby resort of Benalmadena is host to a Butterfly park and Dolphinarium Marine park, as well as a fun cable car with birds of prey displays at the top.

Mijas is the heart of golf country, so those wishing to tee off will be spoilt for choice. The closest golf course to the villa is Mijas Golf Club with two 18-hole courses, but you’ll find many more golf clubs within a half-hour’s drive from the villa.

The city of Malaga, famed for its museums as much as its beaches, is 20 minutes away by car so makes a great day trip. It’s home to some fascinating historic sites, including a Roman amphitheatre, Moorish palaces and 15th century cathedral. Take a stroll around the Soho district to see some vibrant street art or stop in at the Picasso gallery, and make time for a visit to the Ataranzas food market where you can shop for fresh produce and stop for tapas and drinks.

The closest airport is Malaga, a convenient 19 km away.
