Welcome to Villa Mari

Villa Mari is in Sotogrande, which means you’ve crossed over from Malaga into Cadiz. Here the typically clean-lined modern luxe of the Costa del Sol tends to give way to a more traditional aesthetic. And there’s definitely something of a modern take on a Cadiz cortijo feel to the exterior with its variegated terracotta tiles rising up to a tower-style hipped roof.

Inside it’s stylish – deceptively so, in fact – with a bright and breezy ‘Anglo-American meets Andalucia’ aesthetic that rather creeps up on you. Dotted with assorted objets, bold patterns and well-chosen pieces of furniture, the interiors skirt on the high-end shabby chic side of things. Flashy, ostentatious or sterile it is not; it’s personal, calming and, most of all, homely.

A beach house blue dominates the colour palette and is absolutely central to the feel of the place. From aquamarines and azures through to teals and turquoises, it’s as beautiful and calming as the ocean itself.

Villa Mari is far from being simply easy on the eye, flop and drop family villa, though. It also totally triumphs on the location front. In the summer it makes for the perfect pad if you want to catch some of the ultra-glam Sotogrande polo seasons, while a couple of the world’s most prestigious golf courses, Valderrama and the Real Club de Golf, are just a short drive away.

New England Meets Old Spain to Ravishing Effect

A clear interiors theme runs throughout Villa Mari. A sort of Spanish-bohemian take on New England beach house chic, it wouldn’t look remotely out of place as you flicked through the pages of an interiors magazine.

Lots of thought has gone into how it all looks – and the relaxed, homely feel that creates. There are upcycled sideboards and artfully arranged books stacked up in the shelves along with vintage-style vases, candles and Moroccan ceramics. The kitchen and sitting room curtains channel French consul linen with their bold blue and grey stripes; porcelain dog figurines adorn the mantelpiece in the living room; elaborate botanical motifs bring the soft furnishings to vibrant life and old prints of flora and fauna decorate the walls. Plenty of organic materials pop up, too, whether in the form of rattan-y chairs and lights or seagrass rugs.

But this Anglo-American look is tempered by warm terracotta on the floor, and Andalucian geometric patterns and swirling tessellations in the rugs, backsplashes and tiles.

And while it’s very stylish, it also doesn’t take itself too seriously. Light-hearted ‘typically’ Spanish notes also include flamingo and bullfighter paintings and a cheerful esparto bull’s head taking pride of place in one of the twin bedrooms.

Sotogrande Summers Never Looked So Inviting

Aesthetics are a central part of Villa Mari’s appeal, and visual impact has been carefully considered, inside and out. The swimming pool is a case in point. Natural in colour, and filled almost to the brim, it looks more like a water feature in the gardens of some grand Andalucian palace than your typical, rather functional villa pool.

Next to the pool, a lovely, lush lawn area stretches away. It’s absolutely perfect for everything from sunbathing, to throwing a blanket down and having a snooze, or even a late afternoon picnic in the shade of the mature palms, pines and eucalyptus that surround it.

The sizeable wrap-around seating areas outdoors have something of a dual personality depending on the time of year of your stay. In the summer they’re very much a part of the garden, with a dining area and two comfortable low seating spaces being the natural place for everything from long lunches to kicking back and watching the kids as they splash around in the pool.

For shoulder season or winter stays, you can light a fire in the outdoor grate and use it as a second living room – perfect for wrapping yourself up with a shawl and a hot chocolate on those cooler evenings.

Relax and cherish family time in laid-back luxury, in upmarket Sotogrande.

The privately owned Sotogrande estate is the destination of choice for discerning guests looking for an exclusive and private setting away from the madding crowd.

Here you are still on the Costa del Sol yet enjoying the Atlantic climate and lifestyle of Cadiz province. Life here is low-key but high-quality, with luxury beach clubs and a yachting marina, refreshingly few commercial developments and unspoiled virgin beaches lined with sand dunes where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic.

Here in Sotogrande the air is vibrant and clean, landscapes are green and insanely beautiful, perfect for hosting the world’s best golf and equestrian sports which take place each year.

Villa Mari is located in Sotogrande alto-medio (middle), in the ‘D’ zone, just a short drive from all the holiday essentials such as the Sotogrande Equine centre, the lovely beaches, the famous Sotogrande Marina and the prestigious golf courses that attract professionals and aficionados every year.

You are a short drive from the Marina, Trocadero beach club and with easy access to world class La Reserva Golf and Valderrama Golf. Santa Maria Polo Club is just around the corner, where the summer Polo season lets you rub shoulders with the British Royalty and the world’s horse-loving elite.

Only half an hour away you can visit Gibraltar with great shopping, fascinating history and a fantastic music festival which takes place in early September.

For the non-golfers in your group, the luxury Elysium spa is a short drive away from your villa.

The nightlife of Marbella and Estepona, and beachlife at Tarifa and Costa de la Luz are less than an hour away for a different kind of night scene, while Tangier in northern Morocco is a mere 45 minute ferry from Tarifa – book one of our guides to show you the best of it with a door-to-door service!

Dining out can take place in the restaurants of the marina, or in the village centres of Pueblo Nuevo and Guadiaro. Or you might head to one of the chiringuitos along the beaches at either side of Sotogrande for a taste of fresh fish and a cool glass of Tinto del Verano.

For a more Spanish vibe head inland a short distance to explore the delightful white village of Jimena de la Frontera or the castle fortress town of Castellar de la Frontera which punctuate the walking route along Mr Henderson’s Railway to Ronda (we have some excellent guides if you’d like to explore).

Sotogrande is just 30 minutes from Gibraltar and around 1 hour from Malaga airport.
