Sotogrande is unique – not only for its scale, but also for the fact that its creation has been guided by a single master plan. It was the brainchild of an American, Colonel Joseph McMicking, whose dream it was to create an exclusive resort of international standing here.
And exclusive it certainly is. Sotogrande looks and feels impressive: the roads are wide and well-kept, the entire resort is well-manicured and nicely landscaped, it’s secure, and most of all, the various parts come together to create a harmonious and complimentary whole. Drive through the entrance arches and you immediately know you’re in Sotogrande.
A resort that attracts so many of the Spanish and international well-to-do must have something special. It’s as understated and laid-back as Puerto Banus and Marbella are bold and ostentatious.
Sotogrande has the distinct feel of a place that attracts old money. You might think that this would result in a stuffiness and a haughty atmosphere, but that’s not the vibe at all here. For one thing, there are too many young people around. And why not? With an excellent marina, some of the best beaches of the Costa del Sol and a long list of sporting and social attractions in and around the resort, Sotogrande offers a lot of fun, as well as an upmarket post code.
- Fantastic setting: occupying a beautiful green coastal area that runs down from gentle slopes to fine white beaches, Sotogrande overlooks the Rock of Gibraltar and the cliffs of North Africa.
- Style and sophistication: Sotogrande has an ambience and character all of its own, making it a unique low-key, high-style destination.
- Yachting life: it’s home to one of the best and most sophisticated marinas in Spain.
- Golf: with Valderrama just one of several first-class courses, Sotogrande is a true golfer’s heaven.
- Outdoor activities: polo, tennis, beach clubs, spa resorts and luxury Sotogrande villa rentals await – all in great style.
Not only is Sotogrande a paradise for golfers and water sports fans, but it’s also one of the most important polo destinations in Spain.
On the golf front, among its internationally renowned golf courses are Valderrama, Real Club de Golf, Club de Golf La Cañada, San Roque Club, La Reserva de Sotogrande and Club de Golf Almenara. Just a little further afield are the courses of the Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort, La Duquesa Golf & Country Club, Doña Julia, Casares Costa Golf, Valle Romano Golf & Resort and Club de Golf Finca Cortesin.
While most of the courses feature clubhouses with good restaurants and facilities, the unmistakable social hub of Sotogrande remains its pretty marina, where shops, cafés and restaurants enjoy the views over the yachts. The marina is also home to an active yacht club with a sailing school, power boating, scuba diving, rowing and kayaking. The latter can be practiced in the wide Guadiaro River, which reaches the sea here.
Another important social and sporting activity in Sotogrande is polo, for which it’s an internationally renowned centre. The verdant grounds of the Santa Maria Polo Club provide the scene for major international competitions where spectators enjoy champagne and strawberries as they rub shoulders with celebrities and royalty.
Inland, Sotogrande opens up to some fantastic horse riding, hiking trails, cycling and bird watching, as it lies surrounded by protected nature and finds itself on the path of the annual bird migrations between Europe and Africa.
While the marina forms a social hub with a good choice of restaurants, cafés and nightlife, the beach clubs, golf clubhouses and also nearby villages offer more dining and socialising options within Sotogrande.
The fine dining restaurants, cafés and nightlife of Sotogrande centre primarily on its marina and resort centre of Torreguardiaro, though the nearby villages and coastal areas also offer a great choice of country venta restaurants and chiringuito beach bars.
Among the resort’s own iconic institutions are the Trocadero and El Octogano beach clubs, whose swimming pools, lawns, restaurants, bars and beachside clubs offer a refined but relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy the sun, relax, socialise or even have a massage.
For a feast of fresh fish you can also head along the coast road towards La Duquesa to seek out family-run beach cafes serving up the catch of the day. The small enclaves of Pueblo Nuevo and old town of Guadiaro are also favourites among locals for a meal out and a sun-downer in the square.
Many of the boutiques and shops in Sotogrande are to be found in and around the marina, and the Blue Sotogrande shopping quarter, while the nearby village of San Enrique de Guadiaro offers the shopping experience of a typical Andalucian village.
Just 15 minutes to the west is Gibraltar, with its old district and high street lined with duty-free shops and boutiques. Half an hour to the east you’ll find the designer outlets, jewellery stores, La Cañada shopping mall and El Corte Inglés department store of Marbella.
Most, however, come to Sotogrande to relax, take in the refined atmosphere and enjoy the combination of sun, views and natural scenery that makes it such a special spot on the Mediterranean coastline.
