Welcome to Villa El Olivo

A Place Where Nature & Design Come Together to startling effect

As you wind your way through the wooded Ronda countryside to Villa El Olivo you’d be forgiven for expecting a classic cortijo or something towards the more traditional end of the Spanish luxury villa spectrum to be waiting for you on arrival.

And you wouldn’t be more wrong. The façade that greets you as you pull up is a striking, contemporary affair, all stark straight lines and dazzling white forms that have an almost sculptural quality to them.

Inside, the interiors are a compelling contrast of the organic – drawn from the rustic, rural surroundings – and sleek, cutting-edge design. On the one hand, there are lots of clean lines, sharp-edged, gleaming metal window frames, oversized retro lamps, time-worn industrial-style shelving units, statements chairs with a nod to Philippe Starck, and assorted design pieces; on the other, there are rough rendered feature walls, matting rugs, crudely hewn benches and bed heads of gnarled wood. Faux sheepskin and cowhide rugs complete the look.

Fine artworks are also liberally sprinkled throughout the place, from large but thoughtful abstract pieces to an impressive iron horse sculpture that guards the front door.

It’s all very stylish indeed, in other words.

BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INSIDE & OUT

The surrounding landscape has a huge role to play in inspiring the look and feel of Villa El Olivo. And it’s invited in at every possible opportunity. An ancient olive forest begins right where the walls of the house stop, and the huge sitting room opens out on to the silvery-green canopy of trees.

At night, you can go to sleep soothed by the hissing and whispering of leaves as they’re stirred by a warm summer breeze. Two of the bathrooms have views out over the surrounding trees; with their huge windows, it can feel rather like you’re having a long, relaxing soak slap-bang in the middle of a forest.

In the bedrooms, vaulted ceilings of soaring proportions are the order of the day, with light flooding in through enormous windows. To provide a restful environment that’s conducive to a good night’s sleep, the colour palette throughout is a blissfully calming one, running from taupes, creams and off-whites to earthy and grey tones. This neutral colour scheme is offset by vibrant pops of colour in the soft furnishings and chairs.

The more rustic aesthetic leanings on display elsewhere are dialled down slightly in the kitchen and bathrooms. Here there’s a more unambiguous vision of comfort and convenience – no gadget is knowingly ignored in the kitchen, while bathrooms come complete with designer white oval bathtubs, cavernous showers, huge grey and white marble sinks, indulgent products and regal blue Ralph Lauren bath towels.

THE RONDA SETTING – THE TRUE STAR OF THE SHOW

Unheated the pool may be, but it’s also another white-hot piece of classic luxe design. Lined with loungers and a really rather special barbecue area it’s the sparkling centrepiece of Villa El Olivo’s outdoor space.

In keeping with the sleek-rustic-chic vibe that runs throughout, the grounds are stripped back and natural. Grass peeks through the paving stones leading down to the pool. To preserve water – in an arid area when it can get scarce at times – the owners made a conscious decision to leave the grounds bare rather than laying them with thirsty grass.

Around the side of the house a water trough, of the modern, architectural rather than agricultural variety, babbles away. A contemporary take on that classic slice of Andalucia, the fountain, it’s another example of the place’s pleasing power to subvert convention at every turn.

At Villa El Olivo, though, the setting never slips far from centre-stage for too long. The views come at you from every angle – and in waves. First the surrounding olive trees; then the vineyards and the valley; and finally the sun-scoured peaks of the Serrania de Ronda beyond. It’s a place with more than just a little magic to it.

A perfect choice for a first-time stay in Ronda is the escorted wine and bull farm tour where you can get to know the secrets of these important cultures.

Achingly chic Villa El Olivo may be, but it never lets style trump substance for a moment: the house is teched up to the hilt, whether it’s in the form of the underfloor heating, air conditioning and WiFi throughout, the Sonos system and soundbar, or the 85in Smart TV in the living room.

Two interconnected but distinct living spaces stretch out all on one floor, completely flat for ease of access, and offering a different ambience for summer and winter stays.

The kitchen-diner area is a stylishly casual space flowing off the living room, where 8 can sit comfortably for meals at a farmhouse-style table. Gaggenau appliances, a Miele oven, Nespresso coffee makers, Smeg small appliances, wine coolers, gleaming granite worktops and two dishwashers complete an impressive roster of kitchen facilities.

Stepping through panoramic doors, there’s a barbecue terrace with seating for a further 10. A suitably horizontal, holiday-esque breakfast can be taken, reclining, in the shady seating area, while there’s a little poolside table that’s perfect for slipping away from the rest of the group and having a sundowner or two a deux.

A turquoise infinity strip surrounded by loungers and a spacious sun-deck and barbecue area, the pool is a thing of real beauty here. As a backdrop, the mountains of the Serrania de Ronda shimmer and wobble in the heat haze on hot afternoons.

Sun-beds are plentiful, as is additional seating on the terrace which has a sunshade that can be used as required.
