On approach, Hacienda El Valle in Granada looks like something out of a fairytale - the sort of place where a romantic Moorish fable would unfold.

Welcome to Hacienda El Valle

Hacienda El Valle is set within 4.5 hectares of organic private land, and enjoys complete seclusion from its elevated position overlooking the valley. It’s a short drive from the charming village of Saleres (small – but not so small that it doesn’t have a restaurant).

A relatively modern villa, it’s nevertheless reminiscent of Granada’s Moorish past. Caramel-hued and semi fortress-like, it has the soul and inner peace of a much older dwelling. A serene inner courtyard, spacious suite-style bedrooms with terraces, an impressive principal suite/guest house, a pool and cosy outdoor and indoor fireplaces make for an idyllic place to press pause.

Their own olive oil is served at the complimentary breakfast while you admire the groves down in the valley. It’s all ridiculously Andaluz.

In spring wildflowers sway in the meadows around the Hacienda. In summer it’s all about the pool and enjoying the cool air trapped by the central patio, while in winter you can enjoy the three open fires – one outdoors the other two in the comfortable cosy living rooms.

Traditionally Spanish Décor with ARTISTIC Flourishes

All the bedrooms are inward-looking mini suites with the principal bedroom being the star of the whole house. The en-suite bathrooms are well lit, practical and perfectly formed.

The high notes of the interiors are the decorative wall murals – charming, wistful and reminiscent of Central America.

The exterior of the house harks back to southern Spain’s Moorish past, but the interior is heavily entrenched in traditional country Spanish style. Terracotta, stone, and wrought ironwork are constant throughout. Mediterranean elements of blues, okra and browns are present with metal accents. Rich tapestries, hand-painted murals, oversized art and rugs are added for a dramatic touch. The décor isn’t chic and precious it’s homely.

The hacienda has a tower overlooking the front of the house, towards the pool. This enclosed room, and its two sun terraces, makes for a wonderful yoga/meditation space or can be set up for a romantic meal for two.

A Faux Moorish Triumph

The genius of this villa largely lies outside in its location, central courtyard and picturesque bell tower. The setting truly is exceptional.

From the babbling fountains and shady nooks to a sun-soaked pool, whirlpool and your own off-room terrace, there are plenty of places to rest and reflect. It would be easy to steal away for some alone time at Hacienda El Valle under a pine tree or in the second courtyard.

Gathering together is taken care of, too, from the back terrace with outdoor fire, basic fire BBQ and dining table or in the central patio.

There are many hidden outdoor seating spots for a morning coffee or sundowning salute.

Getting active is easy with a private tennis court and a pool with a small pool house/chill-out seating zone.

For the winter, the formal living room located off the courtyard has a grand piano, dining table, desk and comfy seating round an open fire. There’s also a chess set and gramophone in this area.

In the principal suite/guest house, you have a second living room and dining room located on the ground floor, and this leads to the covered terrace at the rear of the house. The kitchen is off this dining room, and the principal suite is above this area on the first floor. There isn’t a door dividing the living space on the ground floor and the suite above.

To encourage complete disconnection, there’s no TV or speaker system onsite. But if a soundtrack to your holiday is a must, or you need to make the odd check-in to the outside world, there’s WiFi throughout the villa.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to dining. There are three main areas, all on the ground floor: the casual living/dining room, a formal dining room and al fresco on the terrace. Each table seats eight people, but they can be extended to 12.

The pool area is a stroll away from the house. Mixing full sun, shade, bathing and comfy, reclining seating it’s a space to spend the day, all the while looking over mountainous countryside views.

The chillout pool house is ideal for a lunchtime refreshment, and the whirlpool dipping pool is just the touch after travelling.

The view through the valley, down to the pretty village and onto the lake or snow-capped mountains is truly something to behold. This is the romance, the reason you stay here. Yes there’s a private pool, whirlpool, tennis court and six mini suites but none of this compares to the dazzling location.
