Casa Camilla is traditionally styled, cosy and utterly charming. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you were sneaking off to a quaint cottage deep in the countryside rather than a luxury villa in smart Sotogrande.

It’s the definition of family-friendly, too, sleeping 10 across a main house and a separate annexe, and with a safe, self-contained garden that’s a lush, tranquil oasis.

Welcome to Casa Camilla

The ‘casa’ part of this smart Sotogrande villa’s name is certainly fitting. Casa Camilla is not just a house; it’s a home. From the warm, welcoming yellow of the facade and the ivy creeping over the roof of the shady terrace, to the countless personal touches in the interiors, it’s an intimate and personal space.

If you’re a lover of sharp, clean lines and modern design, then Casa Camilla probably isn’t going to be the place for you. If you’re looking for a holiday villa that’s traditional, charming and with a typically Spanish feel, then it’s going to be ticking a lot of the right boxes.

One thing’s absolutely beyond doubt: it’s got an awful lot going for it for families and groups of friends. Divided into two distinct, but interlinked dwellings, with a private, gated garden clustered around a gorgeous pool, it’s safe, secure and separate, so different members of the party can have their own space.

Then there’s that Sotogrande bajo location. Whether it’s beautiful beaches, world-class golf courses and summer polo or first-class dining and shopping, you’re just a short drive away from some of southern Spain’s most inviting and exclusive spots.

Tradition & Charm Personified in the Interiors

As you cross the threshold into Casa Camilla, you feel a bit like you’re walking into a charming country cottage rather than a luxury modern villa in the suburbs of Sotogrande. You enter through a lovely, timeworn old wooden door into a gleaming terracotta hallway where walking sticks, hats and handpicked artworks sit alongside dark wooden trunks and antique amphorae.

In the sitting rooms, there are old-fashioned writing desks, slouchy sofas clad in vibrant, rose toile de jouy and intriguing prints of cephalopods and exotic birds on the walls. Adjoining the garden, elaborate chandeliers and areca palms lend a rather grand, colonial feel to a conservatory dining room.

But in spite of all this traditional decor and the pronouncedly cosy feel, it’s a modern house, that’s practical and comfortable first and foremost. The dual accommodation split layout works perfectly, and it more than delivers on the facilities front, from sound systems and strong Wifi to Sky TV and heating and air conditioning throughout, not to mention an open fire in the sitting room for out of season stays.

The five bedrooms are split between the main house and the separate annexe. While those in the annexe have a slightly more modern look, those in the main house are not afraid of introducing bold, decorative elements to the mix. There are dark wood antique dressing tables, deep-rose chintz fabrics, ornithological prints and rich burgundy and cream bed linens against seagrass headboards.

It’s all very charming, all very Spanish and all very homely.

An Uncomplicated Outdoor Space that Lets the Spanish Sun do the Talking

If the interiors at Casa Camilla are elaborate and decorative, on the outside things could hardly be simpler. It takes the raw ingredients of a perfectly relaxing holiday – sunshine, pool, leafy gardens, shady seating areas and outdoor living – and leaves them alone to work their magic.

The gardens are compact but beautifully put together, full of mature plants and wonderfully private feeling. A languid-looking, 8-metre, lagoon-shaped pool sits at their heart lined by pot plants and inviting sun loungers.

The onus here is on simple pleasures. It’s all about providing a space to retreat to and recuperate for a week or two. A space to enjoy the warm sun on your skin followed by a cooling dip. A space to spend long summer evenings together, as a family or group of friends, over dinner and a glass or two of fine wine. A space to sit in the shade of the ivy-clad pergola with just a good book and the sound of bird song for company.

A warm and welcoming living space is home to two separate seating areas. The main central living area extends out from around an open fire with toile sofas in striking cream and rose. It opens out to a couple of shaded terraces on both sides, one to the rear garden and pool, and the other to the front garden.

A separate snug corner of the main living space offers two inviting white sofas and a large TV screen.

In addition, there’s a more modern-style living room located upstairs in the separate apartment with seating for six. A mix of creams and teak furniture with bright pops of coloured cushions, it’s got another large TV screen.

The R&R here is provided by the lovely gardens and 8x4m kidney-shaped pool. After a day of relaxing in the sun, the covered terrace and vine-clad pergola seating area are the sociable hearts of the house as the long summer nights set in.

The main dining room is in a garden conservatory with glass walls, a large oval table that seats 8-10 on white cane seats, and a vaguely colonial feel from the oversize palms and views of the leafy, tropical-esque gardens.

There’s a second dining space in the apartment upstairs in the kitchen area seating 4. A second smaller complete kitchen in the apartment annexe contains modern dark wood and cream worktops, an oven, microwave, induction hob, dishwasher and fridge-freezer.

The main kitchen is small but well-equipped and nicely presented with Silestone worktops and a central prep island. There’s a large fridge-freezer and a separate service area and utility room.

A barbecue area in the garden is perfect for whipping up an outdoor feast for the whole family.
